Chapter Fourteen:
Time to Kill
“Welcome home,” Zach greeted them as they walked through the door. “Please keep the noise down. Your dad’s already in bed. He’s not used to these early morning hours since you’ve been doing the morning chores, and he’s planning on doing them for you tomorrow. There’s a hamburger casserole in the fridge if you want to nuke it. Ross, sorry your Ravens will be home watching the Super Bowl like the rest of us.”
“I know. I listened to the game on the drive back. Too many late season injuries to key players. At least that’s what the sportscaster kept saying.”
“Well, goodnight boys.” They watched his bath-robed figure disappear into the bedroom and close the door.
“Yeah, a quick bite and then bed. All that driving coupled with last night’s action has me exhausted. We can unpack tomorrow.”
Things settled down to a regular routine with the four of them home all the time. Two new calves arrived and #476’s calf still needed daily attention. The boys did a lot of horseback riding. Julian increased his skill at pole-bending while Ross worked up to juggling four balls at a time, having mastered several of the three ball patterns. Alas, the three bulls on the ranch really weren’t too active and didn’t give Julian much of a challenge. Zach told him about a bar that had a mechanical bull, and together they made arrangements with the bar manager for Zach to come in during cleaning hours and practice at the higher settings, provided he sign a waiver that the establishment wasn’t liable for any injuries that might occur.
There were few cattle that Ross could practice his lassoing with and none that he could flip and tie. They were too old and too heavy, and the newborns were too light and too fragile.
These disadvantages appeared quite evident with their first actual competition in Albuquerque. Ross completely missed his calf with his lasso, and Julian lasted 2.8 seconds on the bull. The only plus side of the competition was that Ross got some practice in the arena distracting rider-less bulls and Julian did manage to place seventh in pole-bending. As newbies, they were welcomed by everyone, but not wholeheartedly. They were viewed as simply newcomers who would try once or twice and disappear. One guy in his forties tried repeatedly to put the moves on Ross, telling him how much he loved to suck young cock and that Ross should come to his trailer for a little fun. Ross politely and successfully fended him off. They returned to Amarillo knowing they had to figure out how they were going to improve. The late February trip to Phoenix was even more disappointing. The only difference was that Julian got drafted by two guys to join them in the Drag Race as a driver, to get the steer from the chute to the target line so the drag could get on it. All his years helping his dad herd the cows from field to field gave him an advantage.
